 Thursday, April 16, 7-8:30 PM, Cubberley Auditorium, 4000 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto:  Green Light Earth Day Film Festival with Awards.  http://www.pafd.org/environment/greenlight.asp  Sunnyvale is helping sponsor the event this year.
 
Saturday, April 18

  • 9 AM-1 PM:  Fever Thermometer Exchange at Farmers' Market (To avoid breakage and contamination, mercury fever thermometers MUST be contained in an unbreakable and closed container such as its original case, a plastic toothbrush holder, or a soda/water bottle with a screw-on cap. As a second measure of protection, the closed container must be placed in a sealable plastic bag.  One thermometer per household.) green.insunnyvale.com
  • 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 PM, 164 Carl Road, Sunnyvale: Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off.   California State Law forbids disposal of Household Hazardous Waste to garbage and recycling carts or down drains.  The City of Sunnyvale hosts Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Events for residents, at no cost, every third Saturday monthly (except December).  The Santa Clara County Household Hazardous Waste Program provides certified personnel to conduct collection events. Residents may transport up to 15 gallons or 125 pounds of hazardous waste per trip.  Sunnyvale residents do not need an appointment.   • 9 AM-12:30 PM, Foothill College (12345 El Monte, Los Altos Hills), Campus Center, Nationwide Town Hall on a Just and Clean Energy Future. Free, parking $2.  All welcome.  Hosted by the Foothill College President and the Mayor of Los Altos Hills, this Focus the Nation Event brings together educators, politicians, students and community members, to talk about climate and sustainability issues, and green collar jobs, and discover the programs already underway in our community.   • Sunnyvale Public Library:   Cool Cuisine:  Taking a Bite Out of Global Warming.  Dr. Eugene Cordero, Assoc. Professor -Dept of Meteorology, SJSU.  What if your food  choices had a more profound impact on global warming than the car you drive?  Cool Cuisine is a hybrid cookbook science book that focuses on the multiple connections between the food we eat and our carbon footprint.

  • 10:30 AM, Borregas Bike and Pedestrian Bridges Ribbon Cutting, landing of the northerly bridge crossing 237@ Moffett Park Drive
  • 6:30 – 8:30 PM, City Hall Council Chambers: Earth Day Community Conversation--The Future Is Now. Panel discussion of local and regional business leaders to discuss new and emerging green technologies, why sustainability should matter to the community and things community members can do to be green.  The panel will also highlight their respective technologies as it relates to community sustainability.   • 9 AM. – Noon: Great American Litter Pick-up. Clean up litter in neighborhoods and next to roadways around Fair Oaks Park, Lakewood Park, and the Columbia Neighborhood Center. Gloves, pick-up sticks, safety vests, and bags will be available for our volunteers.  Also, in cooperation with Sunnyvale Parks' staff, some park maintenance and beautification activities needing volunteer help will occur at these locations on this date.
