Tomorrow, Tues., 11/29 1st Presentation of DRAFT Climate Action Plan & Land Use/Transportation Chapter

Sunnyvale Cool's very first request was that the Council adopt the Mayors' Climate Protection Agreement as official City policy. Council adopted the Agreement by unanimous vote on 9/11/07.  The Agreement's first recommendation for cities was to conduct a community greenhouse gas inventory, set a target for reducing carbon emissions, and create a Climate Action Plan to reduce these emissions.

Well, Sunnyvale's consultant has at last completed Sunnyvale's first greenhouse gas inventory. The Horizon 2035 Committee has met countless times during the last year-and-a-half to develop our city's first  Climate Action Plan.  The Committee worked concurrently on the first revision since 1997 of the heart of the general plan, the Land Use and Transportation Chapter, because our City's land use and transportion infrastructure directly impacts our community's carbon emissions. Both of these DRAFT plans will be presented for the first time tomorrow, Tuesday, 5:30 PM, in the Sunnyvale Public Library Program Room.  Council, Planning Commission, Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission, and Sustainability Commission will attend.   Community members are most welcome.

Many presentations of these plans will begin in January to solicit public input. On-line opportunities for public comment will also be available.  These plans will then go before relevant Commissions, presenting further opportunities for members of the community to shape the plans before they go to Council in late summer of 2012 for action.

This Horizon 2035 process--developing, revising and adopting both a Climate Action Plan and a Land Use and Transportation Chapter revision--represents a HUGE opportunity to influence the future of our city.  Please consider actively participating at each stage of the process.  I cannot overstate the importance of the decisions our community will soon make.

The plans are now available at:  horizon2035.inSunnyvale.com
